Adopt a Nest?
A former poacher turned protector
How can we protect hornbills? By protecting their nests. How can we protect their nests? By adopting them! The Hornbill Nest Adoption Project, set up by Dr. Pilai Poonswand at Thailand's Hornbill Research Foundation, does just that. Founded in 1998, the project pays for former poachers, hunters, and other local people to adopt a nest, watch it, and protect it. The combination of financial incentive, chance for local people to utilize their forest expertise, personal pride in protecting the forest, and awareness of the hornbills importance to those ecosystems has made the project a huge success. Maybe this strategy could work for Xidamingshan too.
Check out how the Oakland Zoo and Woodland Park Zoo help support the Hornbill Nest Adoption Project.
