Dr. Pilai Poonswad is called the Mother to the Hornbills because of her tireless efforts to save Thailand's hornbills and their habitat. She is a professor of Microbiology at Mahidol University in Thailand and a world renowned expert on hornbills. She is a member of the Hornbill Advisory group and the recipient of many awards for her scientific and environmental work. The work she has done protecting hornbills in Thailand and the methods she uses are models for bird protection, habitat conservation, and community involvment in conservation.
