Education Event: Pingshan Primary School 坪山小学的保护犀鸟活动
In December, we had a great hornbill education and outreach event at Pingshan Primary School in Pingshan, a small village near Xidamingshan. The whole school was enthusiastic and welcoming. We did our big event with all of Year 6, about 120 students, who were extremely enthusiastic and concerned about protecting the XDMS Oriental-Pied hornbills and their entire ecosystem. The principal had a nice banner made for the event and we got started outside with an introduction about hornbills and why they are called farmers of the forest. Then we split into 4 groups that each took part in four different activities led by our awesome volunteers. The students loved making clay model hornbills with John Xia from Shanghai and Laurence from Wales. They came up with catchy slogans and beautiful images for conservation posters with Mr. Rong from Hong Kong and Xixi. They learned about XDMS ecology and had lots of fun playing the food web game with Que our bird expert from Nanning, volunteer Si Chengling and Mr. Nong from the XMDS forestry office. They struggled against nature, predators and people, just like a hornbill, in the Hornbill Survival Game. It was a fantastic event! Thank you to the school, our volunteers, the Zhongdong forestry department, Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Garden and most of all the students, for making this event a big success!
12月份在西大明山的坪山小学搞了一个环保教育活动。学校很热情地欢迎了我们。120多个极感兴趣，关心保护犀鸟和它们地生态的6年级学生参与了这个大活动。在校长为我们做的红横幅下就开始活动，跟学生聊冠斑犀鸟主体情况，介绍到它们几个小号“森林之农夫”，“爱情鸟”和“飞机鸟”。 然后分开了4个组，每个组会参与4个活动。学生们跟来自上海的夏强先生和来自威尔士的Laurence老师用了泥做犀鸟的像，跟来自香港的荣杰先生和南宁的溪溪小姐设计了环保宣传海报，跟来自南宁的鸟类专家阙腾程先生和南宁的观鸟者泗城岭在外面玩儿“食物网”游戏理解了犀鸟的重要性，跟我一起玩了“飞机鸟飞行器”了解了犀鸟的生存威胁。这是一个很棒的活动！谢谢坪山学校，各位志愿者，中东林业局，嘉道理农场与植物园！特别感谢坪山学校的学生。
